Eradicating hunger and malnutrition is one of the biggest challenges of our time. The consequences of too little or the wrong food not only cause suffering and ill health, but also hinder progress in other areas of development, such as education and employment.
In 2015, the global community adopted 17 Sustainability Goals that will improve people’s lives by 2030. Goal 2 – to eradicate hunger – is a promise to eradicate hunger, achieve food security and better nutrition, and to promote sustainable agriculture. Eradicating hunger is also a priority for the United Nations World Food Programs (WFP).
Every day, WFP and its partners work to bring us closer to the goal of eradicating hunger. Through humanitarian food assistance, WFP brings nutritious food to people in need. At the same time, WFP’s complementary programs aim to combat the underlying causes of hunger by building resilience in communities so that we do not save the same lives year after year.
The world has made great strides in eradicating hunger: there are 216 million fewer people starving today than there were in 1990-1992, despite the fact that the world’s population has increased by 1.9 billion people. We still have a long way to go, and no organization is able to eradicate hunger on its own. If we want to achieve the goal by 2030, the authorities, citizens, civil society organizations and the private sector must work together to invest, innovate and create lasting solutions.
